In an effort to continue to support “College and Career Readiness”, it’s never too early for a student to think about their future.  With this in mind, in mid-March, middle school guidance counselors took eighth grade students from each Sachem middle school building to Long Island University C.W. Post.  The purpose of the trip was to have students begin to think about college and the many possibilities available to them.

During the visit, students attended an information session led by LIU Post Admissions Officers.  They were introduced to ideas such as the college admissions process, typical classes that a freshman would take and campus life activities.  Also discussed, was the importance of doing well in high school classes and the importance of learning how to be independent before heading to college.

After the information session, students went on a guided tour of the campus.  They were able to see a residence hall and dorm room, the student union, the athletic complex and an academic building.

“It was awesome,” said Sequoya eighth grader Victoria Wilkens. “It had good programs that I could choose from.  It showed me a college that I would consider going to when it’s time.”

Sequoya eighth grader, Visrath Kumar added, “It was a good exposure for letting us see what a college is like.”

The trip was a welcome addition to the college awareness activities that are already implemented in each middle school such as College Awareness Week, Alumni College Student Panels and Naviance classroom assignments.
