Sachem Volleyball Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary of nys cHAMPIONSHIP

A decade has passed since Sachem North won its first New York State volleyball championship. Several players and coaches from that team came back to celebrate the historic moment and spend time with this year’s group.

Sachem went 18-0 and beat McQuaid Jesuit that year. They had won three of the previous four state titles, but the Flaming Arrows were the hottest team in the state and only lost their first set all season in that championship match.

Sachem became the first school from Suffolk County to win a Class A state title after the championship was created in 2010.

“In my 11-year coaching career, I’ve never had a feeling like this,” Sachem coach and alum Matt Rivera said after the championship in 2014. “I’m just so happy and proud of these guys. It’s really a special team.”

That same pride was felt this past week as he invited his championship team home.
