The Sachem Sports Club Youth Rec 10’s and Sachem Junior Rec 12’s cheer teams both took second place at the UCA National Championship in Disney World. More than 50 elementary and middle school students from Sachem experienced the moment.
They began this memorable season in July when their coaches and coordinator took a leap of faith during the pandemic. They had no idea if there would be a season on Long Island and the thought of taking another year off, while not getting to compete for the second year in a row, was devastating.
Rather than get left behind, they challenged their athletes to the idea of a travel team that would compete across the tri-state, finding other teams who could give them competition experience in the UCA cheer circuit. That journey led them to Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the Pocono Regional where they received bids to UCA in Disney.
On February 12,, the arena roared as their youth team, made up of 10 year old girls and a few 8 year olds, cheered their hearts out. They performed, while all of the other Sachem athletes, including the Sachem Junior Rec 12’s, both Sachem varsity programs, and an arena filled with schools from across the country, watched. The next day, the Sachem 12’s continued the momentum with their performance.
Their trophies serve as a testament to dreaming big and growing together since they have competed with each other since they were 5 years old.
