A busy fourth quarter kept Sachem in the game against Walt Whitman, but even after scoring 14 points in the final six minutes it wasn’t enough to top the Wildcats, who won 16-14, Saturday afternoon.
The Flaming Arrows (3-1) had two touchdowns called back on penalties and had a would-be touchdown hit off a receiver’s hand that turned into a Whitman interception later in the game.
Sachem’s scoring came on a 23-yard touchdown run by Cam Lee and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Chris Kelly to Michael Heffernan. Lee also scored on a two-point conversion. Sachem had the ball with 1:30 left, but didn’t finish.
Lee had 20 carries, 175 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 reception and 10 receiving yards. Kelly was 4-for-18, throwing for 57 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.
Lee, who reached the 700-700 club last week, made more personal history today. He now has 1,070 career rushing yards and is just the 24th player in Sachem history to reach the plateau. To put this in perspective, there have been roughly 3,300 players in Sachem football history, but Lee and 23 others are the only ones to reach that milestone. He passed Anthony Iannello’s 1,043 yards and now ranks No. 23 all-time in Sachem history. Next on the list is Tyler Andreassi at No. 22 with 1,169 yards.
This season he has 73 carries, 680 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns, all among the top on Long Island through four weeks.
