Same old pitch, new country.
Lake Grove, NY native Joe Scally is across the pond in his new digs with Borussia Mönchengladbach of the Bundesliga. That’s the highest level of pro soccer in Germany for all you novice football fans. Not that football, the other football.
Scally has balanced a Sachem North workload with playing for NYCFC of MLS since 2018. He was transferred from his hometown club in 2019 for the highest fee ever paid for a 16-year-old in MLS history. NYCFC received around $2 million, according to ESPN.
“I want to be part of the team and learn as much as possible from [Gladbach manager] Marco Rose, who is an incredible coach,” he said on a Q&A with the Gladbach media team. “It’s also my goal to help the team be as successful as possible.”
Scally posted to his Instagram account this week saying he completed his first training. Rose said Scally is practicing with the first team.
He is one of the youngest and promising American soccer talents and has played for both the U-15 and U-17 U.S. men’s teams so far.
