Sachem East girls track Christmas update

It was a busy week for the Sachem East girls track team with a crossover meet at Brentwood on Wednesday and the Bishop Loughlin Games at the Armory on Saturday. Brief synopsis: Athletes in a number of events are beginning to step up and make a statement that they will be a force to be reckoned with come championship season. The work is beginning to pay off and the team is beginning to Gel. The seniors are providing the leadership and the younger members of the team are stepping up to meet the challenge. It definitely appears that team depth will write the story of this year’s squad.

The Hurdle crew again led the way at Crossover “C” with Rebecca Carroll (2nd-9.30), Katie Sullivan (3rd-9.37), and Stephanie Kwong (6th-9.90) again running season bests in the 11-team meet. Kayla Garry finished in the top six in both the High and Triple Jumps, Mikayla Cannales impressed with a fast 1500 (7th-5:31.76), and Amanda Fitzgerald continued to shine in the Long Jump (2nd-15’8.5″). Racewalk squad leader Jaimie Fleming placed 2nd in the 1500 Racewalk, with Lauren Harris posting the fastest freshman time in the county (8:26.30) to place fourth in her debut performance in the event.

Likewise, the Bishop Loughlin Games featured a number of athletes clicking off impressive performances. Stephanie Curtin pole vaulted 9′ for the second time this season, and seniors Paige Picasio in the 55 Hurdles (9.53), Amanda Sluzewski in the Triple Jump (32′), and Nicole Silvestre in the 600 Meter Run (1:46.83) were team leaders in their events. Senior Ebonie Lewis ran the fastest split in the 4 by 200 relay (Lewis, Carroll, Sullivan ,Lauren Alberg) that ran a season best 1:52.36, leading off with a quick 27.2. Freshman speedster Marisa Filosa hit 45.60 for the 300 and Alburg ran her 3rd personal best in a row at 55 Meters, knocking another tenth off her best with a 7.78. Sophomore Karli Murphy ran a 5:27.94 to lead 5 East Arrows (Alex DeCicco, Val Romero, Shannon O’Hehir, and Katie Hempfling) under 5:40 in the Mile Run. Top East results from both meets are listed below.

The team will be split in two later this week as a group of 30 travel to the Armory for the Marine Corps Holliday Classicon Friday, and another group of 30 head up to Providence Friday and Saturday for the Rhode Island Classic.
