The Sachem Central School District wishes to advise you that it has made complaints to the Suffolk County Police Department and Federal Law Enforcement Officials that an individual(s) has unlawfully copied or downloaded student data maintained by the school district.
Please be aware that the district immediately notified law enforcement upon learning of this criminal behavior, and has been actively working to assess and identify the nature and scope of the compromised information.
The safety and security of our student and staff population is of paramount concern to the school district.
This egregious violation of the personal privacy of certain students is of grave concern to us, and the district will continue to work closely with local and federal law enforcement officials in an attempt to identify and prosecute those responsible for this violation
Please be aware that a review of the district’s computer network security has revealed no evidence of a “brute force attack” or firewall breach which would indicate a breach of our data systems from the outside.
Access to student records is an important daily internal function of any school district, however, which could render our data vulnerable to a determined criminal actor willing to misuse access to our systems. Please also be aware that the district has now been authorized to, and is in the process of making direct notifications to any individual who it knows or reasonably believes was subjected to this breach of security and exposure of private information. We encourage all individuals to continue to take all reasonable precautions regarding their personal credit information.
Any individual with information which could assist the law enforcement investigation of this matter should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 631‐852‐COPS(2677) and the district abuse notification address at abuse@sachem.edu.
