Sachem and Stony Brook lacrosse continue to grow together by the day. With Tom Haun verbally committing to play for the Seawolves last week, that makes six players from Sachem since the Class of 2011 that currently play or will one day suit up at LaValle Stadium.
Haun, just a sophomore attackman at Sachem, started this past season for the Flaming Arrows. He had 13 goals and 8 assists as a freshman.
“He is tough, quick and has a great stick,” said Sachem coach Jay Mauro. “He’s an extremely diligent worker with a great attitude. It’s team first and all he cares about is winning.”
For Haun the decision to play at Stony Brook largely had to do with the school’s outstanding academic reputation.
“I like that SBU is a university teaching hospital because I am interested in a career somewhere in the medical field,” he said. “I love the campus and the athletic facilities are awesome. It was refreshing to hear Coach Nagle’s valuable advice on the recruiting process. I also got a chance to meet some of the current players and really enjoyed my time there.”
Haun was also considering Rutgers, Towson and Maryland.
Like teammate Jacob Giacalone, who is also a sophomore and gave a verbal to Johns Hopkins last month, this time of a high school lacrosse player’s life can be a demanding thanks to a quick and daunting recruiting process.
“It’s stressful but I also think it was a great experience,” he said. “It is a relief to put my decision behind me and just focus on playing lacrosse for Sachem North.”
