Sachem East softball made program history, winning its first Long Island crown after beating Oceanside 2-0 on Friday at Martha Avenue Recreation Park on Friday night.
Eighth-grader Madison Fisher’s two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning secured the victory for Sachem (20-4).
Sachem will play the winner of Lancaster/Fairport in the New York State Class AAA semifinal next Friday, June 7, at 1:30 p.m. at Martha Avenue.
Olivia DeRose, dominant in the pitching circle this year, allowed five hits and recorded eight strikeouts in the shutout victory.
This is the first Long Island softball championship for a Sachem school since a unified high school won a crown in 1993. The Flaming Arrows also won in 1990 and 1981. Sachem has never won a New York state softball title.
