When U.S. Lacrosse asked Sachem alum, Charlie Rizzuto, to rewrite their physical education curriculum, he had a goal of including fellow alum Eric “Soup” Sopracasa into the narrative.
Sopracasa, an All-American at Sachem who graduated in 1995, died in 1999 when he was hit in the chest with a lacrosse ball during a game playing for the University of Massachusetts.
“Pretty cool that the U.S. Lacrosse PE curriculum has one of Sachem’s best in it,” said Rizzuto, an assistant principal at Islip High School and a nationally recognized physical education clinician and academic leader.
Soup, who was inducted to the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019, is mentioned at the end of lesson one (page 8 if you scroll) in reference to leaving a legacy.
