Don Woolley is a Sachem original great. Hired in the late 1950s he built Sachem’s first dominant athletic program with boys’ soccer, won the first county title in district history, and was a widely respected teacher, coach, and mentor for both students and staff.
This episode was the latest on “Sachem Conversations” an oral history project produced by the Sachem Alumni Association to digitally record and archive Sachem history from the people who made it and lived it.
Since he passed away in 2019, this episode is the first roundtable conversation in the series about the life and career of someone not on the actual show. It featured people who were close with the Sachem legend, including former players Tom Sabatelle and Ray Fell, Frank Schmidt, who took over the Sachem varsity soccer program from him and Tony Petillo, his son-in-law. All four guests are inductees of the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame.
Sachem Conversations is hosted by Sachem Alumni Association President/Founder and Sachem Report Publisher Chris R. Vaccaro.
