Rutgers and Brian Brecht Headed to NCAA Final Four

Sachem alum Brian Brecht has led his Rutgers men’s lacrosse team on a historic run and they’re not done yet.

The No. 6 ranked Scarlet Knights upset No. 3 Penn in the NCAA quarterfinals this weekend and will face No. 7 Cornell on May 28 in the Final Four. This is the deepest Rutgers has ever made it in the men’s lacrosse playoffs.

Brecht, an inductee of the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame, has coached at Rutgers since 2015 and has guided the program to one of its most successful runs in program history.

Along for the ride has been Sachem coaching legend and Rutgers alum, Rick Mercurio, who coached Brecht in high school and does the color commentary for Scarlet Knights broadcasts.

“Rutgers Lacrosse is going to the final four, defeating U Penn 11-9 today,” Mercurio wrote on his Facebook wall. “A very proud moment for me congratulating Head Coach Brian Brecht. Brian was a former player for me at Sachem High School. Go RU!”
