Sachem alum and Oyster Bay teacher Charlie Rizzuto has earned his biggest honor yet when he was named National Physical Education Teacher of the Year, presented by SHAPE America at their national conference in New Orleans last week.
SHAPE is the Society of Health and Physical Educators, which serves as the voice for 200,000-plus health and physical education professionals across the United States. The organization’s extensive community includes a diverse membership of health and physical educators, as well as advocates, supporters, and 50+ state affiliate organizations.
He was previously named 2022 Eastern District Teacher of the Year for High School Physical Education by SHAPE and that qualified him for the national award.
Teaching at Oyster Bay since 2009, Rizzuto’s physical education classes focus on mental well being as much as physical. His lessons on social emotional learning, combined with mental health awareness and physical activity have set trends and allowed students to find their own personal growth levels.
