Sachem East baseball and head coach Kevin Schnupp celebrated collective milestones on Thursday, May 5 when the program reached win No. 200 all-time. Schnupp is the only head coach in Sachem East history and reached the career coaching milestone as well.
Sachem East beat Riverhead 3-2. The Arrows are 13-3 this season and one of the top teams in Suffolk County as the playoffs approach.
Schnupp, who graduated from Sachem in 1994 and has been the Sachem East coach for 17 seasons, ranks No. 7 in wins among active Suffolk County coaches. Colleague and fellow Sachem alum Tom Gambino reached the same 200-win milestone on April 10.
Gambino and Schnupp both played for legendary Sachem coach Bill Batewell who amassed 452 career wins. Batewell, who passed away last year, would be proud that his two disciples have reached 400 wins collectively since he handed over the reigns of Sachem baseball.
Tim Migliozzi from Hills West leads all active coaches with 425 victories.
Uniquely, four of the top nine active winningest coaches are Sachem alums. Besides Gambino and Schnupp, Mount Sinai’s Eric Reichenbach (225) and Smithtown West’s Al Nucci (223) are on the list.
