The legacy of Matt DiStefano lives on. The Sachem alum and former teacher has been awarded the inaugural humanitarian award by New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
DiStefano passed away in January 2020 from kidney cancer. His impact is still felt today through the Dezy Strong Foundation, which he started to help other cancer patients and their families defray costs during their journey.
The award was developed thanks to a resolution passed by the Sachem Central Teachers Association, led by President Philip Barbera, which asked NYSUT to consider recognizing members who make significant humanitarian contributions to their communities.
