On April 5 Sachem North baseball beat Walt Whitman 3-1 to earn their first victory of the 2022 season. It also marked career win No. 200 for Sachem alum and head baseball coach Tom Gambino.
Gambino is the sixth winningest active baseball coach in Suffolk County and has 201 victories as of April 10. He has been the head coach for 17 years, taking over from his mentor and former coach Bill Batewell, who won a district record 452 games.
Colleague and fellow Sachem alum Kevin Schnupp, the head coach at Sachem East, is on the cusp of the same milestone. He has 189 victories.
It’s worth noting that Gambino’s assistant Gary Comstock, also a Sachem alum, has been on the journey for all 200 wins.
Tim Migliozzi from Hills West leads all active coaches with 420 victories.
Uniquely, four of the top nine active winningest coaches are Sachem alums. Besides Gambino and Schnupp, Mount Sinai’s Eric Reichenbach (220) and Smithtown West’s Al Nucci (217) are on the list.
