Former longtime Sachem lacrosse coach Rick Mercurio is adding another honor to his long resume. He has been selected for induction to the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
This hall of fame honors coaches whose mentorship and groundbreaking careers have left an indelible mark in high school lacrosse.
The ceremony will be held at Plandome Country Club on March 12. Tickets are available on the NILCA website.
Mercurio is also an inductee of the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame, Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame and Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Aside from leading Sachem to 316 victories and retiring with one of Suffolk County’s highest boys lacrosse winning totals, he has also been instrumental for helping grow the game on an international level with the Federation of International Lacrosse.
He was named United States Lacrosse Coaches Association National High School Coach of the Year in 1995 and led Sachem to a New York State championship in 1993.
There are 10 total inductees this year, including Larry Glenz from Lynbrook, Chuck Reubling from Delbarton, New Jersey and Bob Deegan from West Genesee.
