Sachem Alums Work Together at United Public Adjusters & Appraisers

After graduating from St Joseph’s in Patchogue 10 years ago, Sachem alum Anthony DeLorenzo made a career decision to embark on a new journey in the family business. In the process he also recruited a number of Sachem alums.

Led by twin brothers Michael, Anthony’s brother-in-law, and Philip Maltaghati, United Public Adjusters & Appraisers, Inc. helps property owners manage and maximize first party property damage insurance claims.

Throughout college, DeLorenzo had become curious about the public adjusting business. Michael, who married Anthony’s sister, would often explain and describe the role of a public adjuster after a local family had sustained damage to their place of business or home.

“Few people are aware that they have the option to hire their own adjuster to represent them after sustaining major damage such as a fire or flood to their property,” said DeLorenzo. “Hiring a public adjuster allows the consumer to have their own advocate represent their interests throughout the claims process. By utilizing a public adjuster, an insured person can assistance in itemizing and detailing all damages to ensure a fair and proper claim reward.”

One year into his tenure at United, Hurricane Sandy swept the northeast region. Having to handle numerous incidents of flood damage, as well as fire damage claims after the hurricane, United assisted many families across Long Island. Having reconnected with many Sachem classmates and families along the way, United has become a trusted resource for the Sachem community, DeLorenzo said.

As the company continued to grow, in 2016, he recruited James Southard, Sachem Class of 2007. Lifelong friends from their days at Waverly Avenue Elementary, he knew Southard would be the perfect fit. Southard has a master’s degree in accounting from Hofstra University and has become a key foundational member of the inside claims team. His ability to analyze and detail damages has made him a key component of United’s firm, DeLorenzo said.

The team also added Ryan Casali, Sachem Class of 2009, and Rachel LaBuda, Sachem Class of 2010. Casali leads the inventory team as he helps itemize and document personal and business property items.

“By detailing each item’s value and age, his role is pivotal in making sure that a policyholder attains full value for their belongings,” said DeLorenzo.

LaBuda helps assist in the day to day affairs in the local Melville office. She also ensures that the insurance carriers and adjusters are held accountable while expediting offers for our clients. Her ability to effectively communicate and provide consistent updates to clients has made her a trusted resource for the team.

These four Sachem graduates take pride in holding insurance companies accountable for allocating proper funds to families after a tragedy.
