When they needed him to play big, Chris Kelly had yet another career-defining performance.
The senior quarterback has put the Flaming Arrows on his back the last two weeks as he’s dominated defenses with his running game.
Kelly had a career-high 228 rushing yards on 12 carries and scored 2 touchdowns in a 21-7 win over Longwood on Friday night at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium.
“We had something to play for today and I think we proved it,” said Kelly, who scored on a 25-yard touchdown run as time expired in the second quarter to put Sachem (4-4) ahead, 14-7, at halftime.
The Flaming Arrows held Longwood scoreless in the second half and Kelly provided insurance points on a 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.Kelly had carries of 83 and 60 yards, respectively, in the game to
Sachem’s Tyler Hall had 30 carries, 108 yards and 1 touchdown.
Sachem had already clinched a playoff seed prior to this win, but the 4-4 finish secures a higher seed. It’s not official until all Section XI Division I schools finish their regular season by tomorrow, but Sachem will likely be the No. 5 seed and play at No. 4 Ward Melville on Friday, November 5.
“We started off rough this season, but going 3-1 in the last four games is huge for us,” said Kelly. “We’re ready for the next one.”
