Sachem North to Play Carey in Rare High School Football Game

Sachem heading to Nassau for a regular season football game? Welcome to 2021!

Sachem North’s original Week 2 game against Commack has been postponed because the Cougars are in quarantine due to COVID-19 protocols. Sachem will travel to Franklin Square and play Carey High School on Saturday, March 20 at 2 p.m.

Both Sachem and Carey were in a similar situation looking for a game. They each tried to play conference games, but after juggling possible opponents and requests, this was the outcome, according to Sachem North head coach Dave Caputo.

Carey competes in Nassau County’s Conference II and lost to Garden City, 35-0, last week to open the season. Sachem is coming off a 24-8 win over Division I rival Ward Melville.

This marks just the third time in Sachem’s 61-year history that the Flaming Arrows will play a Nassau school. The other two times happened in Long Island championship games, a 1995 loss to Lawrence and a 2013 win against Farmingdale. Caputo was a player in 1995 and an assistant in 2013.

This is also just the seventh game in Sachem history with an opponent not from Suffolk County. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, many schools in Suffolk, including Sachem, played non-conference games. This took Sachem to Massachusetts against Brockton High School in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and to Brooklyn against St. Frances Prep in 1991.
