For so many friends and family of Matt DiStefano, a lasting moment was when he was recognized at a New York Islanders game earlier in the year. He made his way around the inner ring of the Nassau Coliseum smiling and being strong.
Though he was suffering, he was fighting and being Dezy Strong, the name of his foundation that lives on in his memory since he lost his battle to kidney cancer in January.
The New York Islanders have continued their relationship with Dezy Strong and met up with DiStefano’s family at their home in the middle of their playoff run last week. Team owner Jon Ledecky stopped by too.
“Once again, theĀ New York Islanders have demonstrated the first class organization they are with this truly special and amazing visit,” the foundation wrote on its Instagram account.
Jennifer DiStefano, Matt’s wife, filmed a video for social media about continuing Dezy Strong Thurday’s – wearing Dezy Strong shirts – to keep his memory alive. That will continue throughout the school year in Sachem where Matt was a teacher, coach and alumnus.
Jennifer also said the foundation will be holding events in the future and we’ll post updates to promote those as information becomes available.
