Sachem Alumni Open New Healthy Food Option on Hawkins Avenue

A pandemic did not stop Matt Riss and Mark Ciaburri from launching their new brick and mortar store on Hawkins Avenue in Lake Grove.

The Sachem alumni launched their healthy prepared meals business in 2019 originally as X-Factor Meals, and mostly virtual with deliveries. They saw steady growth and aspired to launch a physical shop in their home community.

They changed the business name recently to Redefine to have more broad appeal and their goal is to feed as many people as possible with healthy and convenient food at an affordable price. To do that locally means a great deal.

“As two former 2014 Sachem North graduates we are incredibly excited to open our first retail location so close to home,” said Ciaburri. “The amount of local support we’ve received from friends and family has been overwhelming. Our roots are embedded in this community and we’re incredibly grateful to be able to be part of it.”

Both played varsity soccer at Sachem North. Mark played at Buffalo State and studied dietetics, and Matt played at Brockport and studied exercise science. Between their studies and experiences, they had an idea to begin preparing pre-game meals designed specifically to be eaten on the road. Click to read their full launch story on Sachem Report.

Like all local businesses, the pandemic hindered their timeline for the storefront. They waited anxiously for the right moment this summer.

“The pandemic greatly affected our business,” said Riss. “In times like these we realize our impact is much greater than just convenient meals.”

They were also able to partner with the Orange Theory gym chain to supply thousands of meals to local health care professionals.

“Our goal is to continue to build our online presence and doorstep delivery, while opening grab-and-go stores all across Long Island and NYC,” said Ciaburri. “This business model has proven successful and we’re excited for what the future brings.”

Redefine is offering free sample meals to anyone who is interested in trying their product at the shop, and if you mention this Sachem Report article you’ll get 10% off your first purchase. The shop is located next to the Lake Grove Deli, across from Lake Grove Village Hall.
