Sachem alum had honor of playing in final season for legendary hoops coach
Just to be recruited by Muffet McGraw is an honor, but to actually play for the Notre Dame coaching legend was undoubtably a special experience for Sachem alum Danielle Cosgrove.
McGraw, 64, stepped down as the head women’s basketball coach for the Irish after 32 seasons. A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game, McGraw left an impact on Cosgrove, one of Sachem’s all-time basketball greats.
“I am so blessed to have played under you for the past two years,” Cosgrove wrote on Twitter. “The game will not be the same without you. Thank you so much for everything you have done for this program. Always Irish.”
Cosgrove graduated from Sachem East in 2018 and scored 1,573 career points and 1,037 rebounds.
Notre Dame announced that Irish alum Niele Ivey, a former longtime assistant to McGraw, will be the new head coach.
“Welcome home,” Cosgrove also tweeted.
She saw time in 31 games and averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game last season. The Irish lost to Pitt in the first round of the ACC tournament.
