Lake Grove’s own makes splash on international soccer scene
Joe Scally is on the move. He has to wait until 2021 but he just made a splash on the international soccer scene after being transferred from NYCFC of the MLS to Borussia Monchengladbach of the Bundesliga. That’s the German league for all you non-soccer fans.
Scally would be a junior at Sachem North if he wasn’t a budding professional soccer star. Through June 2018 he was taking classes at Sachem but has since signed a contract with NYCFC – the youngest by an American soccer player – and risen through their youth development ranks.
This transfer fee – estimated at $2 million – is the highest paid for a 16-year-old MLS player in league history.
Scally has also grown as an international player as of late, playing for the U-17 U.S. World Cup team and was a member of the NYCFC team that won the Premier Division of the 2017 Generation Adidas Cup.
“I was very excited when I heard the news about the transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach,” Scally said in a statement. “As a kid you always want to play in Europe and in one of the best leagues in the world. I couldn’t be happier. Looking towards next season, I hope to play a lot of minutes and help out the team as much as I can as we look to achieve our goals. It’s always the same for us, to finish first in the league and win MLS Cup.”
