Elliott was a lineman but may always be remembered for his Monday Night catch
Deep into the night on October 23, 2000, Sachem alum John “Jumbo” Elliott made one of the most improbable catches in football history and now it’s ranked as one of the top 100 moments in NFL history.
Elliott, a lineman, caught a touchdown pass in overtime from fellow Long Island native Vinny Testaverde to push the Jets past the Dolphins in overtime on Monday Night Football. The catch has since been referred to as the “Monday Night Miracle.”
Elliott, who won bowl games at Michigan, won a Super Bowl with the Giants and is one of the best linemen in New York football history, etched his name in football lore that night.
The play is now ranked No. 92 on the top 100 plays in history, which the NFL Network is counting down in honor of the 100th anniversary of the NFL.
