An occasional piece about the foundation of buildings in the Sachem Central School District
To accommodate Holbrook’s growing student population at the time, construction of a new elementary school was authorized in 1955.
Grundy Avenue opened its doors in October 1956 and was designed to allow for future expansion to nearly 30 in a classroom.
Even then, more than 60 years ago, there was a vision of rapid expansion within the Sachem community.
This was an exciting time in Sachem’s history as Lynwood Avenue Elementary and Sachem Jr./Sr. High School, now known as Samoset, were also being constructed.
Richard W. Straton served as the building’s first principal. Today, the Grundy community is led by Laura Amato.
