Roller hockey wins big in first season competing in new league
Sachem’s varsity roller hockey team captured the Island-wide Varsity Tier 2 Championship in their first season in the league this year. This is an external school club not part of Section XI or the Sachem Central School District.
The team is a combination of players from both Sachem East and Sachem North. They finished the regular season in first place in Tier 2 with an overall record of 9-5-2.
Team leader Ryan Gauggel was given the playoff MVP as he scored four goals in the championship game to give Sachem the lead over Farmingdale.
Smart defensive plays by Sean Kavanagh gave Sachem control of the game and they never looked back. Also, a notable performance from freshman all-star Andrew Battelli as he registered a goal and two assists in the final game.
The team was organized and run by Sachem substitute and coach, Tom Hughes and St. Josephs College roller hockey coach, Dino Verone. Both coaches were given the honor of the “Coach of the year”.
Next year, the organization plans on expanding to also have a JV team. Any Sachem hockey players interested in joining the organization (Varsity, JV, or Middle School) should contact Coach Hughes by email at THughes@sachem.edu.
