STEM co-curricular team takes home top honor at regional tournament
Lynwood Avenue Elementary School has picked up where it left off last year with massive success in the Destination Imagination (DI) competition.
The school’s fourth grade team captured first place at the DI Eastern Regional Tournament held this past week at Somers Middle School in upstate, New York.
This team chose the Fine Arts Challenge and students were tasked with creating a two-act musical. For this they had to design, create and integrate music and lyrics into both acts. They also created a spectacle that highlights an unforgettable event in the story using two production techniques as well as having integrated a set change that utilized technical methods. Finally, they had to create and present two “team choice elements” that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength and talents.
The team consisted of Keya Pai, Kyle Fink, Saiyum Sheth, Jack Cordero, Hannah Barkin, Dianna Burns and Ava Barrett, and, of course, their team coach, Mrs. Dulovic.
The DI program, a co-curricular activity at the school, encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning.
Lynwood’s participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process.
These talented fourth graders will continue to progress to larger tournaments throughout the spring and we will keep you updated on their fun and impactful educational journey.
