Sachem alumni are performing incredibly well for the Sacred Heart track and field team.
Michael Kearns from Sachem North and Trevor Guerrera from Sachem East are both team captains at Sacred Heart University and off to great starts this season.
During one of the opening meets of the season Kearns recorded an indoor personal best and ICAAAA and New England qualifying mark in the shot put. He ranked first in the NEC with his throw of 52’0.5 feet (15.86 meters), and then beat that during his next meet with a throw of 52’2.75″ ft (15.92m). He’s ranked first in the conference by four feet.
Guerrera also opened his season with an ICAAAA and New England mark in the 3000 meters, crossing the line in a new personal best time of 8:21 for fifth place. For his efforts he was named NEC Track Athlete of the Week.
As Sacred Heart wrote, “he contested a 3,000-meter race for only the second time in his storied collegiate career and posted the second-fastest time in NCAA Division I for the season’s first weekend. Guerrera ran the 3K in 8:21.00 at the Boston University Season Opener. Immediately ascending to the top of the NEC leader board, the fourth-year Pioneer, who competed in the fastest heat, finished fifth overall at BU and was the first DI athlete to cross the line. Despite moving out of his middle-distance comfort zone, Guerrera beat the IC4A championship qualifying standard by 7.0 seconds.”
