Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone presented Sachem alum Maria Michta-Coffey with a Distinguished Service Medal for her athletic accomplishments during a ceremony last week at the county offices in Hauppauge.
Michta-Coffey, who graduated from Sachem in 2004, recently qualified for her second Olympic Games. She will be competing in Rio in August in the racewalk. She also competed in the 2012 Games in London.
This medal is a rare honor that has only been given out to less than 40 individuals in Suffolk history.
This year has been filled with accomplishments for Michta-Coffey, who was also inducted to the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame and the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame before qualifying for Rio in June.
