Junior Lauren Harris won the 1500 Meter Racewalk (6:35.16), setting both a New York State Junior Class Record and a Meet Record, to highlight Sachem East’s outstanding performance at the New York State Indoor Track Championships held at Cornell University this past weekend. Her performance is the third fastest in New York State history.
Beyond Harris, six other Sachem East Arrows brought home medals awarded to the top six in each event, medals that come with the additional title of “All-State”.
The 4×800 meter Relay of Val Romero, Ciara Murphy, Jill Manfredi, and Alex DeCicco placed fifth (9:32.15), with DeCicco also placing 8th in the 1000 Meter Run (3:00.58). Erin Leonard heaved a personal best in the 20 pound Weight Throw (42′ 11.5″) to place fifth, with sophomore Christina Artusa grabbing 24th (35′ .75″). Amanda Fitzgerald placed 15th in the Shot Put (34′ 10.5″), and Rachel Ruggiero ran a 5:17 mile to anchor the Section 11 Intersectional Relay to a 2nd place finish.
Sachem East sent a school record number of athletes to this years meet who returned home with a school-record number of All-State honors.
The Indoor season comes to a conclusion at this weekend’s New Balance Indoor National Championships, held at the Armory in New York City. The East Arrows will be competing in a number of events over the course of the three-day meet.
