Merrimac Elementary fourth graders Jason Harper and Tariq Mirzada helped raise more than $800 for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) with the synergy of the Merrimac student body.
Students were invited to assemblies in which Jason and Tariq shared their PowerPoint presentation. They shared the World Wildlife Fund’s mission along with their vision for a better world.
Tariq and Jason had students vote for an endangered animal they wanted to help. The classes that raised $100 or more receive a plush mascot for their class to keep. It will serve as a reminder of their service project goal, which they shared on one of the Power point slides: “Our mission is to raise money to help endangered animals in the wild. We raise the money for cameras to catch poachers, more fence around habitats, and to rebuild habitats.”
“Their project is quite impressive,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “They worked diligently on the PowerPoint slides, poster board for the voting days, flyers, posters, and daily announcements about different endangered animals. They wanted to find a way to make an impact on all of the students at Merrimac. The goal was to raise awareness, teach, and contribute to the WWF.
“I am proud to share that they achieved their goal and made an impact on all of us. I think these two students’ symbolize the impact the Leader in Me process has had on the culture of our school. It shows what is possible when students see the greatness within themselves and are empowered to step up with ideas and projects which are purposeful and meaningful.”
