Sachem East senior Stephen Turnbull has committed to play Division I soccer at Stony Brook University.
“When I went there I felt like it was the right place for me,” said the outside back during a National Signing Day event at the high school on Thursday, a day after he actually inked his Letter of Intent.
Turnbull was also considering Kentucky, Fordham and Assumption, among other schools.
“It’s an honor to coach great kids and Stephen epitomizes class,” said Sachem East soccer coach Matt Stallone. “The way he carried himself on and off the field is a great example to our other players. He will be a great fit for Stony Brook. They got a diamond in the rough, because he’s going to explode there. He’s underrated and will be a steal for them.”
Turnbull said his most memorable moment at Sachem actually came four years ago as a freshman when he scored on a header to beat Brentwood in overtime.
“These years on varsity I had the greatest time,” he said. “It was a great team and we all had a good time playing together.”
Stony Brook finished 7-8 last year and competes in the America East Conference.
He plans on majoring in civil engineering.
