Students and staff at Merrimac Elementary School helped organize a coat drive that generated more than 25 bags totaling more than 200 coats during the holiday season.
Led by Kaylee and Matthew Ostroski, Merrimac’s Student Lighthouse Team helped spread awareness about the need for warm coats. School psychologist and Lighthouse Team leader Bethany Fredette guided the students.
The coats were taken to Long Island Head Start as part of the One Warm Coat initiative.
“The Student Lighthouse team spread the word and they are proud that they will make a difference,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “The Student Lighthouse Team shared an important lesson — when a coat is no longer needed, people will remember our coat drive and donate it.”
