Fourth-grade students at Chippewa Elementary School raised more than $700 for breast cancer with a pumpkin decorating contest.
All Chippewa students voted for their favorite pumpkins between Oct. 28-30. There were cups placed next to each of more than 50 designed pumpkins, allowing children and teachers to contribute change for the fundraiser.
“I was totally amazed and impressed that the students raised more than $700,” said Patricia Aubrey, Chippewa’s principal.
Chippewa fourth-graders have held a pumpkin decorating contest for at least 10 years. The idea started with students, not teachers, Aubrey said.
Through the years, the school has raised money for several causes, including breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Epidermolysis Bullosa, in honor of late Chippewa student Grace Peshkur.
“This is a great event because I love the kids’ creativity and the community service aspect of it. And because it was the kids who came up with the idea,” Aubrey said. “The kids do it with their parents so it gets the whole community involved.”
The pumpkins were displayed on risers in the cafeteria. Among the colorful and creative pieces were pumpkins designed to resemble animals, cartoon characters and food items.
“It was a natural choice to raise money decorating pumpkins. It’s fun for the kids because it was appropriate for the time of year and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” Aubrey said.
