When Doug Shanahan moved south he took lacrosse with him.
The Sachem alum and national lacrosse star helped establish Nexstar Lacrosse in 2010. It’s the longest running high school lacrosse showcase in Florida. The most unique aspect of the showcase is that coaches from the Division I, II and III levels coach each game. This allows for strong recruiting ties and oversight by colleges and universities throughout the country.
The 2016 Nexstar Florida Top 199 Showcase will take place January 9-10 and is open to all boys in graduating classes from 2016-2020.
Attendees experience two full days of games with and against elite players form Florida, access to a recruiting seminar by Hofstra men’s lacrosse coach Seth Tierney, and hands on instruction from some of the top lacrosse coaches in the nation.
Shanahan presents an interesting Sachem and Long Island connection to the event. Sachem alums and college coaches Brian Brecht (Rutgers) and Chris Panos (Tampa) recruit at the showcase. Shanahan played and starred at Hofstra, so the connection with Tierney and the Pride is also natural.
“We are constantly striving to raise the level of Florida Lacrosse and help our players experience and benefit from interacting with top-level college coaches,” said Shanahan.
Shanahan, a prep coach and sports administrator in Florida, also has his own camps and clinic in the spring and summer on Long Island, which draw many local student-athletes looking to learn from one of the best lacrosse players in American history. Shanahan, the only lacrosse player to have his number retired at Sachem, is an inductee of the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.
