The Sachem East girls varsity swimming and diving team participated in the National Brain Tumor Society’s Long Island Walk at Jones Beach.
This walk was to raise awareness for those living with brain tumors and Sachem participated in celebration of Luke Carusillo, the 4-year-old son of Sachem alum Jennifer Guiliano-Carusillo.
Luke had a craniotomy and neurosurgery this past April. He is currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center for a brain tumor and will continue to do so for another year.
Coach Katie Dugan messaged Guiliano-Carusillo immediately after seeing a post on her Facebook page and said she wanted to be a part of it.
“When her team arrived at the walk, I was so emotional at the number of girls and parents that took the time on a Saturday to drive all the way out to Jones Beach to support our little warrior whom they have never met,” said Guiliano-Carusillo in an email to district administrators. “They have even asked Luke to come to a home meet to be a special guest! We cannot express enough how thoughtful, mature, and fun these young ladies are! It was a honor to have them walk beside us. As a Sachem graduate, and now a Sachem mom, I am proud to be a part of this community. WE ARE SACHEM.”
