Sachem North senior Shawn Raum is the latest student-athlete in the school district to commit to play college sports.
Raum, a face-off specialist, will play lacrosse at Mount St. Mary’s.
He visited McDaniel, Susquehanna, Merrimack, New York Institute of Technology, and Southern New Hampshire University. He had some interest from West Point, Binghamton, Franklin and Marshall, Muhlenburg, Tampa, Elizabethstown and Hartwick.
His older brother George played at Sachem North and Franklin & Marshall.
Raum recently caught up with Sachem Report to talk about his college commitment.
Sachem Report: How did you go about making your college selection?
Shawn Raum: “Academically, the Mount has a program that will help me reach my goals. I like the small classroom size and the chance to earn my masters is a huge plus. Athletically, I chose the Mount because the coaches took time to watch me play in a variety of environments. I also got to play against the other 2015 and 2016 commits and I felt that we clicked. The mountain views that the campus has are amazing and I can not wait to visit again in the fall.”
SR: What does it mean for you to be a student-athlete at Sachem?
Raum: “I know there is a huge life after Sachem but what I did not realize is there is no place like Sachem. We have it all and I intend on having a great senior year. As a two sport athlete at Sachem I’ve had some incredible coaches during my career. Between the wrestling and lacrosse coaches, I have learned many valuable lessons along the way. Being an athlete at Sachem has put me in a great position to be successful through the rest of my life.”
SR: What kind of goals have you set for yourself for the rest of your Sachem career?
Raum: “I have a lot of goals for senior year. I want to improve upon my grades from last year. During the lacrosse season, the goal remains the same as always, to win. I hope that I can control the ball as much as possible to help put my teammates in a better position to win games.”
SR: How much of an influence has your brother been on your career?
Raum: “George is an extremely hard worker. Anyone that knows him knows that he takes school and training for lacrosse very seriously. He is a great role model and he takes the time out to help me in the weight room. He motivates me, and I am sure he will continue to push me in a positive way.”
SR: Final words from you?
Raum: “I would like to say thank you to Sachem community as a student/athletes we value the support. I would also like to thank you to my family, my teachers, and all my coaches.”
