Rebecca Barra: “My inspiration for my art comes from various moments in everyday life. My biggest inspiration is my Grandfather Vincent Barra. I was fortunate enough to be raised by him. He has taught me and continues to teach me so much that I use in my art and my life. He was a furniture and painting restorer that retired at 85 years old. An artist who used his artistic gift to support himself and his family. That is what I strive to do and am doing in my own way now. He is my best friend and the entire reason I am an artist.”

SR: How would you describe your style?

RB: “I would describe my painting style as a mix of surrealism and realism. I love portraits and faces. Recently I’ve done some fun sports art. I love adding an element of 3D to canvas. Such as a baseball players bat coming off the canvas. I also love painting faces I see in abstract swirl designs or wood grain. My photography is also a combination of surrealism and realism. I love dark imagery. Abandoned buildings are my favorite place to take photos.”

SR: What are your career highlights and notable accomplishments thus far?

RB: “My most notable career highlight was working with homeless kids for 9 years. Teaching and helping them through their art was indescribable, and rewarding. My current most notable career accomplishment is working for Steiner Sports. It has been a truly fun and exciting experience. A big thank you to another Sachem graduate, Stephen Costello for opening this door for me! Another notable moment was being published in his best selling inspiring book, “My father never took me to a baseball game”.”

SR: What type of impact did Sachem have on your life and career?

RB: “Sachem was such a fun high school to go to. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to take art classes that were teaching college related skills. I learned things that students were not learning until college. I also had some really great teachers. I always felt that they really cared about me and my future. Lastly the lifelong friendships that are irreplaceable. I’m forever grateful to Sachem.”
