Sachem North freshman Sean Mankowich is traveling to Japan this summer as part of the People to People Ambassador program.
In the program, students get submersed in foreign cultures and make connections abroad that last a lifetime.
He left on July 3 and will be traveling across the country through July 16. His travels will take him from Tokyo through Mt. Fuji, across the hot springs of the Nagara River, in a home visit with a Japanese family to learn about daily life and culture and Kinkakuji Temple and Nijo Castle, among other places.
Mankowich said he chose Japan because it’s vastly unique compared to other cultures and his family has a distinct appreciation for Godzilla.
“Life is short, the world is big,” he said, “go explore it.”
