Like an art gallery, Sagamore Middle School’s hallways are catching the attention of many in the Sachem community. Our latest addition, a beautiful mural of the Lorax, can be viewed outside the classroom of science chairperson, Mrs. Laura Marek, whose love of the Lorax is known throughout Sagamore. Mrs. Marek commissioned the artwork by inviting the very talented Lana Ho to create it.
“I selected Lana because she demonstrated outstanding artistic capability throughout the school year. I spoke to her art teacher, Mr. Lacetera, and he agreed that she was a good selection for the mural,” recalls Mrs. Marek. “I spoke with her in April about my vision for the mural and the following day she had an amazing sketch for me. She came during her lunch period, stayed after school and even came in on a day she didn’t have school in order to complete it.”
Lana was honored to be given the opportunity to create the mural, adding to a very positive atmosphere, thanks to the many talented students and staff at Sagamore. Lana commented, “Every time I walk down the hallways and read the messages, I am reminded that I am important. Everyone’s important and together we can make the world a better place. I accepted the invitation to create this mural because I felt it would send a positive message to those who walk by. I also didn’t want to pass up the opportunity since painting a mural was one of the things on my bucket list. It took about two months to finish it. I would paint during lunch periods or even after school. On the last day of classes, my friends helped me finish it before our math regents later that day.”
Lana had never heard of the Lorax until Mrs. Marek introduced the book to her science classes on Earth Day. Echoing many science students, Lana explains the connection Mrs. Marek has with the Lorax. “Mrs. Marek is keen on caring for the earth. She taught us to think about our actions before performing them. She reminds us that we should be respectful to everybody – especially the earth. I think it sends a positive message about caring for the earth.”
For many, Lana had quietly and successfully completed her three years without demanding much attention. Her independent work ethic, intelligence and diligence allowed her achieve in her own quiet way. When her classmates and teachers saw her artistic ability, they were astonished. Mrs. Marek warmly describes this revelation. “I saw her open up through her artwork in a way I had not witnessed in the classroom. The students think it is awesome and when they hear that Lana did it, some students are amazed and some had no idea she has this talent. I think it has helped her to make her mark on Sagamore in a way she feels comfortable. Middle schoolers often have a hard time finding their niche.” Having the opportunity to shine, Lana created this amazing piece of artwork leaving a positive message for her school community.
Creating this mural has had a positive impact on Lana, who is going on to Sachem East and has inspirational plans for her future. “I plan on doing what I love to do, drawing and caring for others. I will always think about my actions before doing them. For example, recycling and turning off the water faucet when brushing my teeth. I’m sure the world would appreciate it if everyone does the right thing.” She is still amazed that she was able to create this mural. “It’s like I’m leaving my mark, literally. I find it surreal that what I’ve created will be left for everyone to see for who knows how long.”
Lana hopes that the message of the Lorax will continue to inspire her local community and has advice for future middle school students. “My advice is to always be prepared. It helps when taking something like a test. Be sure to study and not procrastinate. Also, don’t stress over the little things. Use those mistakes and learn from them and enjoy your time here at Sagamore!”
Mrs. Marek speaks for the entire Sagamore community by stating, “Every time I pass the Lorax mural in the hallway I am in awe. I will always remember Lana, and so will Sagamore.”
