Led by Alex DeCicco’s three individual wins, and role in the 4×800 Meter Relay win, Sachem East edged Bayshore 112-109 in a tightly contested Suffolk County Division 1 Championship that required East to score in 12 of the 18 total events.
DeCicco certainly was the catalyst- winning the 800 (2:17.08), 3000 (10:18.77), and the 1500 (4:43.11)- but it was the total team effort that led to the win with 18 Sachem East athletes contributing to the scoring. Val Romero scored in two open events (second in the 3000, 10:28.16 and third in the Steeplechase, 7:24.30), while three others won their events: Shelby Trentini took the 400 Hurdles (63.44), Kerstyn Ciulla won the Pole Vault (11′), and Lauren Harris dominated the 1500 Racewalk (6:55.63).
Angela Calabrese grabbed third in the 400 Hurdles (68.49), Jordan Messineo took fourth in the Pole Vault (9’6″), Erin Leonard placed fourth in the Discus (106’10”), and Rebecca Carroll placed fifth in the 100 Hurdles (16.56). Sachem East’s strongest event was the 1,500 Meter Racewalk where, in addition to the win by Harris, Jenn Campbell placed second (7:11.75), Chelsea Benedict 6th (7:21.97), and senior Jamie Fleming finished just out of the scoring placing seventh.
As expected, pulling out the win came down to the final events of the meet- the Relays- and East needed to score in all 3 Relay events to lock up the win. The 4×800 squad of Jill Manfredi, Ciara Murphy, Kaylie Wessberg, and Alex DeCicco won in 9:30.71; the 4×400 quartet of Shelby Trentini, Kaitlyn Famiglietti, Kerstyn Ciulla, and Angela Calabrese placed fourth in 4:06.90, and the 4×100 squad of Lauren Alberg, Rebecca Carroll, Marisa Filosa, and Sam LoCascio took fifth and ran a 50.39.
Close behind Sachem East and Bayshore, Sachem North (82 pts) grabbed 3rd in the field of 16 Division 1 Teams led by Leah Blackall’s performances in the Triple Jump (39’2.25″), Long Jump (18′), 400 Meter Run (58.93), and leg on the winning 4 by 100 Relay (48.46).
