Sachem North beat Half Hollow Hills West, 20-10, in first round Suffolk County lacrosse playoff action on Friday night, but the victory was dim in comparison to the tribute to fallen NYPD Detective Brian Moore that took place throughout the contest.
Sachem North donned helmets with the NYPD logo on one side and “thank you for your service Brian Moore” on the other. The team also raised more than $900 to support uniformed officers.
Det. Moore was fatally killed on the job in Queens Village earlier this month.
“Anyone who puts their life on the line everyday to protect the people of this country deserves to be honored,” said Sachem North lacrosse coach Jay Mauro. “Brian lost his life serving an oath to protect us. The stickers and tribute is minimal in what he has given to all of us. He gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
Sachem North’s Lighthouse Leadership Club put the memorable lacrosse moment together.
Dylan Rhatigan had a game-high five goals and two assists, while James Avanzato had four goals and five assists for No. 8 Sachem (13-4).
The Flaming Arrows will travel to top-seeded Northport for second round playoff action on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
