Sachem North boys lacrosse opened its 2015 campaign in grand fashion on Friday with a 14-4 victory over Archbishop Spalding in Maryland.
Playing at historic Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins University, the Flaming Arrows were led by Sean O’Brien’s five goals and Tom Haun’s four points (2g, 2a).
“The boys played hard and fast,” said Sachem North coach Jay Mauro. “They worked well together and they understand that it’s ‘we over me’ and each guy on the team plays an intricate role on the team. As long as we keep those thoughts we will be ok.”
Sachem (1-0) had six different goal scorers and nine different players register at least one point during the contest.
Also scoring for Sachem were James Avanzato (2g, 1a), Nick Gutman (2g, 1a), Mike Sofia (2g, 1a), and Jake Castorf (1g, 1a).
Mike Licata, Will Russo and Dylan Rhatigan all recorded assists in the victory.
Goalie Jacob Giacalone, who has committed to play at Hopkins, recorded seven saves.
The defense, led by seniors Ian Junge and Joe Simone held Archbishop Spalding to only a single goal in the second half.
The Long Island-Maryland rivalry between the two teams is knotted at 2-2, with this year’s final score producing the largest margin of victory to date.
Sachem opens its conference schedule at home against Patchogue-Medford on March 25.
