Two student-athletes from Sachem East represented the Long Island team at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic and The Brogden Cup. The Classic was held over the summer, while the Cup was played recently.
Seniors Tyler Alvarez and Joe Licata helped Long Island to a 6-0 record during the summer, which earned them a slot to compete internationally for The Brogden Cup.
Team Long Island again went undefeated, 4-0 this time, to capture the tournament championship, beating National Co-Champs Maryland twice and Team Ontario twice.
The Binghamton-bound Licata scored an empty net goal in extra time for Long Island during one of the games.
“In the games against Canada, we were focused on our country,” Licata said on the tournament’s website. “We brought out an American flag with us only to our games against the international powerhouse Canada. We felt that if we lost on our own soil, it would not go over well and made it our job to bring home the title.”
