Merrimac students Joshua Andrechuk and Lauren Lucas recently took part in a learning project in honor of Rich Becher, a Sachem parent who passed away coaching his son’s little league team this year. Both students are fifth graders in Renee Richter’s class.
The students raised almost $400 for the Rich Becher Memorial Foundation by collecting money during their lunch periods. They had other students guess how much candy was in a jar and awarded a prize to those who guessed correctly.
“They have made a difference by beginning with the end in mind,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “The students synergized and came up with this fundraiser plan.”
The relationships Mr. Becher cultivated as a parent, and coach live on.
“The fundraiser has made quite an impression on our school community,” DeCicco said. “Students and families contributed and learned about the tragic accident and the importance of promoting safety in sports. They knew Rich Becher as a coach and great person.”
