Two members of the New York Islanders visited Tecumseh Elementary School on Wednesday.

Matt Carkner and Ryan Strome spoke to students about their careers including how they became interested in hockey, healthy eating and nutrition, the importance of teamwork and being leaders.

They showed the students a highlight tape of the Islanders and spoke about their experiences growing up in Canada and now as professional players.

They also answered questions about everything from what they eat for breakfast (eggs and bacon), their work out routines (they still have skating coaches), the best and worst parts of traveling and the hardest team to compete against (the Penguins!).

The Islanders organization was kind enough to give each student a folder with the Islanders logo on it and a pencil.

The players also signed autographs and jerseys for the students and staff as the audience was decked out in Islanders blue and orange.

“The students truly enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal about the life and experiences of a professional athlete including the importance of teamwork,” said Tecumseh Principal Laura Amato. “Let’s Go Islanders!”
