The Sachem East Girls Cross Country team wrapped up the 2014 League II title with a 25-30 win yesterday over their Sister Arrows on North’s home course. With both teams currently ranked in NYS (North #25 Class A, East #7 Class A), the race proved to be very exciting with East pulling out the win despite a determined North effort.
“The girls followed the race plan to perfection,” said Sachem East coach Dan Schaub. “They should be proud of all they have accomplished thus far this season. There is lots left to accomplish.”
The win over North follows an outstanding effort at NYC’s Van Cortlandt Park this past weekend where the East Arrows placed 5th in the prestigious Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan College Invitational. Sachem East finished behind 3 teams currently ranked the the US Top 25, but managed to finish ahead of several of NYS’s highest ranked teams as well as the NJ #1 and VT #1 teams.
The Arrows were led by Alex DeCicco (14th-15:02) and Val Romero (27th-15:28), with Tiffany Ly (39th-15:47), Rachel Ruggiero (42nd-15:52), and Caitlin O’Hehir (54th-16:07) contributing to the scoring. Karli Murphy 73rd-16:34) and Ciara Murphy (74th-16:45) were close behind, running strong, inspiring races. Also turning in outstanding performances were Shayna Arrigo, Kaitlin Veigl, Jill Manfredi, Rachel Semetsis, Lauren Harris, Brooke Howell, and Cortney Evola. That strong pack of 7 allowed the East Arrows JV squad to finish 2nd overall in their race.
This weekend, the team travels with the East boys and North girls squads to Providence, Rhode Island for the 32nd Annual Brown University Invitational, held at the flat and fast Goddard Park XC Course. Featuring over 2000 runners from many of New York and New England’s top teams, the Arrows will again run in the featured Championship Race as they prepare for the upcoming Championship part of the season.
