One week after an impressive second place finish ahead of the Northport Tigers and only three points behind upstate powerhouse Bronxville at the Villa Bears Invitational at Van Cortland Park, the East Arrows upset defending champions North Penn of Pennsylvania to win the Large School Varsity “A” race at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational in Jackson, New Jersey.
Alex DeCicco took first place overall, posting the 4th fastest time of the day, as the East squad scored 54 points, with North Penn 2nd (84 points), and Caesar Rodney High School of Delaware 3rd (131 pts) in the 20 team race. Also contributing to the scoring were Val Romero (4th), Tiffany Ly (12th), Rachel Ruggiero (14th), and Ciara Murphy (24th). Caitlin O’Hehir, Jill Manfredi, Lauren Harris, Shayna Arrigo, Kaitlin Veigl, Brooke Howell, and Cortney Evola also recorded very strong performances in both Varsity and Junior Varsity races.
Matching their JV team championship at Villa Bears, the Wild Safari JV squad took home their second straight team championship. In each invitational, the East Arrows put six JV runners in the overall top 10 of their race posting times that would fare well in most any varsity field.
The East Girls Cross Country team has risen to #10 in the N.Y.State class “A” rankings, a ranking that will fluctaute throughout the season as the Arrows clash with some of the state’s best in coming weeks. They have a dual meet record of 2-0 and will host Lindenhurst tomorrow at 4:00PM on the Tom Toscano 5K Cross Country Course at East. Senior day festivities will begin at 3:45 p.m.
