In 1960, Sachem Schools participated in a student-exchange program with Newton Schools in New England.
Here is an excerpt about the program in the Sachem yearbook from 1960:
Although Sachem has not yet reached its capacity, the student growth in future years will show a tremendous increase in populace. This was one of the reasons prompting the civic minded Lions Club of Ronkonkoma to sponsor a student exchange to a well established New England high school with an over-population problem.
These students were expected to formulate opinions in Newton’s solution to this problem in order that if it be deemed necessary this system could be effected at sachem. The students who participated in this exchange were: Judith Belden, Carolyn Fields, Joan Herdman, John Thelman and faculty advisor, Mrs. Ethel Lantis.
The results may be considered fruitful. If the administration of Sachem is forced into a student over-populace, then in the opinion of the exchange it would be possible to modify the Newton system to our own means, and thus solve this problem.
